Electrical Permit (Commercial & Residential Work) Application

 Step 1 of 1

Application under construction. Applications submitted while under construction will not be processed.

Electrical permits are required for work on any electrical system in a commercial or residential setting. Most electrical work must be performed by a licensed and bonded contractor.*

*Residents meeting the following conditions may perform “repairs” to their electrical system. Residents who meet
the following conditions may not “perform electric service installations or alterations”. To be eligible to perform
“repairs” to an electric system, the work must be performed by the Owner at an Owner Occupied Property. All
electrical work not in conformance with these conditions and/considered electric service installations and alternations
must be completed by a licensed and bonded contractor.

Additional conditions and permits may be required based on the type of work to be performed. If you are not sure
what types of permits are needed, the best way to find out is to call the Building Division at 563.326.7745. It is
unlawful to perform electrical work without a permit. You may be fined if you proceed with work that requires a
permit.

The City of Davenport adopted the State of Iowa Electrical Code with local amendments. Some key items to look are minimum wiring size, new construction requirements, unfinished basement requirements, maximum loads, junction boxes, EMT connects, kitchen counter receptacles, arc-fault circuit interrupter protection, tamper-resistant receptacles, swimming pool requirements, and ground fault circuit interrupter devices.

Application Process. Complete and submit this form when requesting a building permit. Staff will process the application and send an invoice for applicable fees once approved. A permit will be issued and sent to applicant upon receipt of payment.
